However, other types of licenses in Iran have different requirements. For instance, First Grade Driver’s license in Iran requires a minimum age of 21. Let’s dive a bit deeper into the legal driving age in Iran.

Different Types of Driver's Licenses in Iran

There are five different types of driver’s license in Iran. Let’s quickly review each one and check their required age:

  1. Motorcycle Permit: 18 years old
  2. Personal Vehicle License (Third Grade): 18 years old
  3. Light Commercial Vehicle License (Second Grade): 23 years old
  4. Heavy Vehicle License (First Grade): 25 years old
  5. Special Licenses: Varies depending on the type of vehicle and license

Third Grade License only covers vehicles with a maximum weight of 3,500 kilograms or a seating capacity of 9 passengers. Moreover, to drive vehicles that weigh up to 6,000 kilograms or have a maximum capacity of 26 passengers,  a Second Grade License suffices. But, you need to obtain a First Grade License to drive heavier vehicles.

There’s a new law in Iran that allows people with a minimum age of 16 years to obtain a motorcycle license for some special bikes. These bikes don’t have a larger engine than 125 cc. On the other hand, heavier motorcycles with a higher engine volume than 200 cc require special permits. And you must be at least 23 years old to obtain them.

How to Get a Driver's license in Iran?

The process of obtaining a driver’s license in Iran involves several steps. Prospective drivers must first complete a comprehensive driver education program, which includes both theoretical and practical training on traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices. After completing the training program, individuals must pass a written exam to demonstrate their knowledge of traffic regulations. Once they have passed the written exam, they undergo a practical driving test to assess their driving skills. If successful, their driver’s license is granted and valid for 10 years. The newbie drivers are not allowed to drive on Iran roads for the first year.
