However, it’s not even the capital of New York state. What determines a US state capital are its accessibility, historical background, and political reasons.

Let’s break it down in the simplest way possible. Here is the US states map.

US States by Region
The US has four major regions: Northeast, South, West, and Midwest. Let’s break down each one of them.
Northeast

California has many iconic cities as well. What comes to mind when naming the US cities after New York? Los Angeles or San Francisco, right?! Well, both of these cities are located on the coastline of California. Other famous California cities are San Diego, San Jose, and Sacramento.

What Does D.C. Stand for in Washington D.C.?
Washington D.C. is the capital city of the United States of America. It’s home to America’s iconic presidential resident, the White House. But can’t they just call it Washington? Does the D.C. stand for “da Capital”?!
Let’s answer another question. What state does Washington belong to? The answer: none! Washington is an independent area run by the federal government. But it’s not large enough to call it a state. Therefore, its founders in the 18th century decided to call it a district. And they named this district Columbia. So, Washington is a city located in the District of Columbia.
